This book is a coherent and comprehensive account of the essence of «holistic» organization development. It respects pragmatic imperatives while explaining in a common-sense way what a «learning organization» is and how one may be created in a step-by-step fashion.
Origins. The origin of the book can be found in the investigations carried out by me and Jimmy Algie on approaches to decision-making, published in 1989. The contents have been converted to a web-friendly form and posted as part of Deciding and Achieving.
Contents. The book explains clearly how management culture can and must be progressively strengthened, why so many consulting projects fail, and why there are so few «learning organizations». There are 7 stages. Relatively few organizations are even at Stage 5. Most large organizations, perhaps the majority, are probably at Stage 2.
Social Change. The Spiral explained in the text accords with the development of ideas about management since the beginning of the twentieth century. This historical development has so far been spontaneous and without any awareness that it is following a predictable path. The stage just emerging now is one where creativity and personal commitment are the essential requirements.
Readership. Designed in an easy-to-read two colour format with helpful text boxes and diagrams, the book has been written for distribution to all managers and senior professionals of organizations whose CEO is determined to create and lead a sophisticated high-powered enterprise. It is also suitable for adoption by teaching institutions and training departments.
